Most of the time when people talk about squats, they think of squatting with a heavy weight supported on the shoulders or overhead. Squats are also a great body weight exercise. Body weight squats are often called “air squats” and can be done in high repetition for a great workout.
I prefer body weight squats to pushups as a staple exercise because the motion of a squat is more fundamental and useful in everyday life (for picking stuff up, standing up, etc.) than a pushup motion.
